18 die going to, from event; 14 were Floridians
DAYTONA BEACH - Bike Week 2006 is over, but the carnage will be remembered for years. Bike Week 2006, which began March 3 and ended Sunday, was the deadliest since the event began 65 years ago, with at least two of the record 18 deaths reported through Saturday sharing ties to Brevard County. Friday, Robert Fliss, 51, who was traveling home to St. Cloud, died at 10:54 p.m. after he lost control around a curve westbound on State Road 524 in Brevard County and skidded into a construction site, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. David Rush Batson, 61, of Cocoa Beach became the event's seventh fatality when he was killed at 1:19 p.m. Wednesday on International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach. A truck crossed Batson's lane while turning at Red John Drive, FHP reported. This year's deaths surpassed the 15 recorded in 2000, previously the most deadly Bike Week on record. At least 14 of the 18 bikers who died were Florida residents, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Trooper Kim iller said. Authorities attributed the spike in deaths to the sunny weather, which caused a rise in Bike Week attendance. Eight motorcycle-related deaths were reported during last year's event.
