Icon Neo-Daytona Jacket Print E-mail

Icon is a new name in the motorcycle apparel game--one with a refreshingly street-smart vibe. Pieces like this Neo-Daytona jacket incorporate the features of traditional motorcycle gear--removable armor in the back, elbows and shoulders, for example--but look more like something you'd wear to the club and less like some reject from Buzz Lightyear's closet.

Icon jackets feature a "straight-cut" fit that is broader through the shoulders and more generous everywhere else, presumably to be more compatible with American body types and help avoid the matador-look imposed by "form-fitting" European jackets. The Icon cut was almost too generous for me--the size 42 fit fine on top but bunched up around the bottom when on the bike. But I'm built more like Popeye than Bluto--buff bikers will certainly appreciate the roomier fit. Although reasonably priced (Neo-Daytona, $349.95), the jacket is finished with top-end details such as a removable, nonbulky liner, padded neck roll collar, zippered inner (cell-phone) pocket and snap adjustments at the waist.

Back or underarm venting would be a welcome addition (there is none), though the perforated lower sleeves flow a good bit of air. Our only substantial criticism (aside from a billowy fit for willowy builds) was a chintzy YKK zipper that is slow on the uptake, and bulky welts around the chest band that sometimes foul the zipper on the way up.

Icon also sent a matching pair of Super Duty gloves ($39.95), which very much deliver on the promise of motocross glove comfort with substantially more protection. How much more protection is questionable--there's still a lot of Lycra between the fingers and over the knuckles. Not for track duty, but for short hops around town and mellow rides, these are very comfy and cool. For more information call (619) 258-5365 or visit www.rideicon.com.
