Do you carry a flashlight? Print E-mail
Monday, 24 October 2005

Do you carry a flashlight in your emergency tool kit on your motorcycle? Or are you in reality just packing along dead batteries in a tubular storage unit?

Get with the times dude! There are a whole new generation of flashlights out there that don't rely on batteries. They have a magnetic generator and a storge unit that combines with an LED bulb to provide a reliable source of emergency lighting with just a minimal amout of shaking of the unit.

....

Now if you are like me and spend your evenings on the road in the Dome Tent Inn you will really appreciate these handy lights. My four night stay on the grassy knoll at Sturgis this year afforded an ample oportunity to wring out one of these impressive gadgets. You wont be catching me without one from here on in.

There are getting to be more and more companies building these and a simple Google search will yield a plethora of different models to choose from!

Here is Nightstars advertising blurb:

Have you ever reached for a flashlight or emergency light and found dead batteries, a broken bulb, or a corroded mess. Tired of replacing batteries and throwing the old ones in a trash dump. Never again! With only one moving part, the NightStar® transforms motion into light. Over and over again. NightStar's® elegant and simple design uses no batteries or incandescent light bulbs and needs no other replacement parts. When fully charged, with only 30 seconds of gentle shaking, NightStar® produces a beam of light that lasts for several minutes. In total darkness NightStar® illuminates a six-foot diameter area at 35 feet.
Contained within NightStar®, a high field strength magnet repeatedly passes through a wire coil, generating, electrical energy. Magnets mounted at both ends of the unit magnetically repel the charging magnet, allowing it to oscillate smoothly and quietly through the coil. A capacitor stores the energy and powers the high brightness white-light LED.

NightStar® uses a sealed magnetic switch, which is durable and intrinsically safe. All of NightStar's® state-of-the-art components are contained within a nearly unbreakable, waterproof and chemically resistant housing. NightStar® is designed for reliability, versatility, and durability. We guarantee that NightStar® will work when needed -- in any environment on the planet!

NightStar® is a renewable energy emergency light source that does not require batteries or bulbs, and recharges when gently shaken. When fully charged, with only 30 seconds of shaking, NightStar® produces a beam of light that lasts for several minutes, which in total darkness illuminates a six-foot diameter area at 35 feet. A capacitor stores the energy and powers an ultra-bright white-light LED. Superior to a battery, the capacitor will never corrode, can recharge several hundred thousand times and will power the LED even under extreme hot or cold temperatures.

All of NightStar's® state-of-the-art components are contained within a nearly indestructible, polycarbonate, waterproof housing, ensuring operation under severe and rugged conditions. The black and yellow bodies are even tougher with a materials combination of polycarbonate and ABS.

NightStar will provide effective illumination whenever needed. Though not as bright as most other batterypowered flashlights, it is infinitely brighter than other flashlights when their batteries are drained of energy or corroded and their bulbs are broken or burned out.NightStar's ability to operate whenever and wherever needed, coupled with the benefits of not buying and discarding batteries, makes it a truly useful and practical product. When ordinary flashlights fade away, NightStar will guide the way.
