FL, FX, FST, what do they mean? Heres a full list of Harley model numbers and their explanation.
The first letter of the model designator reveals the engine series:
First character:
G - Servicar three wheeler, 1932 to 1972
E - Overhead valve 61 cubic inch "big twin" (Engine/trans separated)
F - Overhead valve 74 or 80 cubic inch "big twin"
K - Side valve 45 and 55 cubic inch sports bike that replaced the WL in 1953 and was replaced by the sportster in 1957. It had many design features that were carried over to the Sportster.
U - Side valve 74 or 80 cubic inch "big twin"
V - Side valve 74 cubic inch made prior to 1936
W - Side valve 45 cubic inch made 1934 to 1952
X - Sports and special construction. Applied to 1918-1922 opposed twin Sport, 1944 military opposed twin, and 1957 to present Sportster.
There were others, such as the J series (a very nice looking bike that was about the hottest thing around in the 20's) but you're not likely to see them in daily use anymore.

You may wonder why we're talking race cars on a motorcycle website - it's because this particular race circuit builds cars with a Yamaha FJ1100/1200 Motorcycle Engines.
What is a Legends Car?
In April of 1992, a revolutionary new race car, the Legends Car, was unveiled at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, President and General Manager of CMS, and Elliott Forbes-Robinson, famed road racing champion, designed these 5/8-scale fiberglass full-fendered versions of the famed NASCAR modifieds driven by legendary drivers such as Fireball Roberts, Curtis Turner, Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson, and Banjo Matthews. The idea was to create a fun, safe, and affordable "spec" class of racing for everyone.
Competitors are not permitted to make any major changes to the original car. Add a strict set of rules including a $4,300 engine claim rule and a tough technical inspection, and you have a series that is fair for everyone involved.
The cars feature a "new" Yamaha FJ 1200 motorcycle engine which produces approximately 125 horsepower. Horsepower is not a significant factor in the Legends Cars Series because the rules require the use of a 13 inch, 60 series BF Goodrich radial "Legends Edition" tire mounted on a 7-inch wide steel wheel. The tire is of a moderately hard compound and no alterations may be made to the tires.

By Dirck EdgeWith Lance Armstrong winning his 7th Tour de France this week, I started to think again about bicycle frame technology. You may already know that carbon fiber frames are very common in the bicycle industry. At least, for higher end bikes, and certainly for race bikes used in the Tour de France. Bicycle engineers choose carbon fiber when they want the ultimate combination of light weight and strength
engineers choose carbon fiber when they want the ultimate combination of light weight and strength. Why don't we see carbon fiber road bikes manufactured any where near the scale of carbon fiber bicycles, which are available at your local bike shop? Cost is a factor, of course, but bicycle manufacturers have found enough customers willing to pay the premium for this frame technology. |

Indian Shores, Florida – For 30 years, Jim Cotter has enjoyed riding a motorcycle and that “alive” feeling he gets cruising down the road. Jim Cotter, Motorcycle Enthusiast: “The minute you get on it…you become electric!” But lately, Cotter’s choice of transportation has been getting some second looks. It’s part motorcycle, part chariot and part wheelchair. Cotter discovered the vehicles being used in Merida Mexico. They’re built there and people in wheelchairs drive them about town. Cotter figured the disabled in the United States could use them too. |
