The Saskatchewan Safety Council is pleased to offer two motorcycle safety courses. They are outlined below:

Introduction to Motorcycling

Introduction to Motorcycling is a 6- 8-hour course designed for individuals who have NO experience operating a motorcycle and would like to experience the very basics of operating a motorcycle.
Our program introduces the sport of motorcycle riding in a non-threatening and relaxed environment. The smaller class size means that riders have more contact with the instructors and more time to practice basic skills such as balance, clutch control and slow speed maneuvers.

The cost for the program is $160.00 plus GST.

Motorcycle Training Canada - Gearing Up ***I highly recommend taking this one***

This 21-hour program is designed to help prepare you to ride a motorcycle in a traffic environment.
The Saskatchewan Safety Council is excited to offer a new motorcycle training program in Saskatchewan for 2008. Motorcycle Training Canada is a course developed in consultation with other provincial safety councils.

Here are some of the topics covered in the Motorcycle Training Canada Program
-Before you start
-Riding tactics for the urban rider
-Traction and control
-The open road
-Balance and braking
-Starting the engine
-Slower speed control
-Higher speed control
-Basic traffic behavior
-Emergency techniques

Bikes are provided for you to learn on. You do not need to hold a valid motorcycle learners license to take this course. Our instructors are highly experienced riders and qualified trainers in motorcycle safety.

The cost for the program is $350.00 plus GST.

Not through the Saskatchewan Safety Council. I believe Redline might offer one and I think there is another local group of riders that put together a program. I can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Just phone a local bike shop and they should know who offers courses there.

Yeah, Paul's right - there is no SSC course offered in Saskatoon but there is a great course offered called the Saskatoon Motorcycle Training Course.

It's run by a great group of guys, many of which were previous SSC instructors in the Saskatoon area when it was still run there. It's also $50 cheaper than the SSC course coming in at $300. The course covers many (if not all) of the topics the Gearing Up (SSC) course offers but is not affiliated in any way with them.

2008 Dates
# 1 May 9, 10, 11
# 2 May 12 - 16
# 3 May 23, 24, 25
# 4 May 26 - 30
# 5 June 6, 7, 8
# 6 June 9 - 14
# 7 June 20, 21, 22
# 8 June 23 - 27
# 9 July 4, 5, 6
# 10 July 7 - 11
# 11 July 14 - 18

Course Itinerary

Each evening students will learn practical, as well as educational, information about the safe operation of a motorcycle. Defensive driving skills are emphasized and taught to all students.

If weather should cause a delay in practical riding, Saturday morning will be used to complete the course. We want people to come prepared to ride even if it is raining, as the day will probably come for all riders to ride in the rain and it is also good experience.

Practical driving skills, that include everything from the basics up to emergency maneuvers:

* cornering
* braking
* shifting
* balance
*controls, etc

Classroom instruction will cover:

* accident avoidance
* group riding tips
* riding gear suggestions
* passengers and how they affect the ride
* emergency situations
* rider awareness, and
* bad weather survival, etc.

This course will not provide you with a SK motorcycle license! It is intended to give you the best skill development and knowledge in order to become a great and safe rider! For a beginner or as a refresher, this course offers information which could save a life. Motorcycles are “invisible” to many drivers, come learn how to protect yourself in a safe controlled environment.

The cost of the course for 2008 is only $300 per student (GST Included).

Why does Regina have this course and saskatoon does not?

I was wondering why the location was only placed as the Regina. So the extra 70$ enables you to not have to go to SGI for the drivers test?

No, you don't come away with a license through the safety course. You still have to go through the normal steps with SGI to get it.

You can get your license through the Sask Safety Council BUT you have to be a graduate of the Gearing Up program. In my opinion it is worth the extra money ($70) for this option as it's not just "trying for your license". It includes classroom sessions on group riding and other details. Then you take the road test with the instructor and two other students, as a group. The road test takes a few hours if I remember correctly and was worth every penny. If you pass this, you get your license. If you don't. You have to go through SGI.

As for why there isn't a Sask Safety Council run course in Saskatoon anymore? You will have to call them and ask as I won't make a comment on it here.

Thanks for clearing that up Paul. I wasn't aware that there was even an option that you could go for your license through SSC so that's good to know.

Thanks for the info Instructor Paul.
I'll give em a call in a minute and ask em.

The 70 bucks for the guided tour to the M would be worth it if I didn't live in Toon town, I could hire a personal tutor cheaper than doing the course there.

Hmmmm? That is an interesting option, but is it feasable?

Less Kevin has a spare room and an extra beer fridge... preferably full. I don't snore but I don't sleep either
(Just kidding Kevin, no need to hide)

Kewl, sending my form in this week.
The SGI thing doesn't bother me really. If I can't pass it with them on my butt than I shouldn't be riding.
