Oil question 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Every motorcycle forum I have ever belonged to has sooner or later got around to the great "oil debate" question. Dino vs synthetic. So I thought, why not here as well.

Me, I put synthetic in after 6-10K. Especially for the Harley which is air cooled, this seems to help - or maybe I just like to believe it helps. :jump:

Forgot to mention, oil threads seem to keep coming back over and over, so Kevin, my apologies, but someone had to get this going....

Re: Oil question 3 Years, 3 Months ago
i heard that if you have an older bike not use synthetic cause the seals arent made for it or something. also i heard synthetic is bad to switch to after using normal oil cause the seals can get saturated in the normal oil and the synthetic uses it as a medium to permeate through the seals. ive never heard this from a viable source but ive heard a couple of times. i just use synthetic (on my truck) cause it seems to have held out a lot better when i change it at 5000 kms.

From what I have read on the Synthetic oils and the wet clutch is that there is no problem as long as it is not Energy Conserving. Most of the guys on the Magna Forums use the Shell Rotella T synthetic in the state. Myself, I have been using AMSOil in my Magna for the past several years. I have also read that Mobil 1 Synthetic is very popular, I think the one made for diseals.

I have a buddy that had a GS750(not sure the year) and he used synthetic of one sort or another and low and behold the clutch started slipping. He sold the bike post haste for cheap only to find out later it was just the oil. :oopssmilie: Somebidy got a good deal.

I think he used the energy conserving one with all the ant-friction stuff so maybe the regular synthetic would be alright???

from what I've heard/learnt synthetics aren't too bad if you start to use them at the correct time. I guess it's best to break in an engine with regular oil then switch to synthetic after a couple thousand km's or so. I know I threw Motul synthetic in my 2001 GSXR 1000 with 12,000 km's on it and it smoked like a son of a bitch for about an hour. Actually had large blue clouds around me, it was nuts!! The smoke went away after a couple of days. Since then, I'm a little worried about putting synthetic into my new bike. :dunno:

Re: Oil question 3 Years, 3 Months ago
I usually put 6-10K on an engine to get the cylinder walls nicely broken in and then move to a motorcycle rated synthetic oil. Never had a problem with smoke or clutch.
