Adjusting carbs 3 Years, 5 Months ago
Anyone know how to adjust the carbs as in mixture - rich/lean?

I have an 82 GS750T with Mikuni carbs and it's running seriously rich and now I notice that a couple of the header pipes are discoloured (as in yellowish - meaning mixture ain't quite right)

Any ideas? Went to Cycle Salvage and he said there was noone in town with an exhaust analyzer so I'm out of luck.

I find that hard to believe...I would prefer to do it myself if I can but anyone that has ideas of where I could take it to would be welcomed as well...

PS-I know where the mixture screws are, but I have yet to play with them. I went to thegsresources.com and they say tighten them all the way in and loosen them off *about* 2 turns....it's the "about" that gets me...lol

A really good resource for technical items on a motorcycle is the NightRider site. They have a Mikuni manual online at http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/download/Mikuni_manuals/tune_mikuni_carbs.pdf. This should get you pointed in the right direction.

Also, you can get a better understanding of what your carbs are doing by reading your sparkplugs. Some reading material can be found at
http://www.strappe.com/plugs.html and http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/spkplghnbook.htm

A quick summary - start the bike, ride it on a deserted piece of highway, pull the clutch in and kill the engine while the bike is still moving. Come to a stop, remove each plug and compare it to the pictures in the above article. The reading should tell you if you are lean or rich - exhaust pipe colour is not a good indicator of this.

If the carb reads lean based on the plugs, check for an air leak first. Fire the bike up and spray WD-40 near the air intakes fittings. If the engine RPMS change, its because you are sucking in WD40 which means you have a leak. If you have black soot in the exhaust, you are likely running rich.

Sorry, I can't help you with the exhaust analyzer - its one tool I no longer own, but reading spark plugs is pretty easy to do and gives almost as much information. Once you understand what the problem is, then use the carb manual and your owner's manual to start adjusting.

Three last points, if you do decide to open up the carbs for adjusting and cleaning, buy the gasket kit in advance. Second, there is no need to show how strong you are when you tighten carb parts. They strip super easy and are really a pain to fix when this happens - or at least thats what I've heard, okay, thats what I know. And finally, do adjustments in small increments. Turn an adjuster a quarter turn, make a run, compare the results, make another quarter turn, make a run, compare the results, etc.

This is one of the reasons why both of my bikes are now fuel injected. I can tune from a laptop and get readings on what is happening inside the engine. My wife's bike is still carb, but I don't even bother with it - I just send it into Alsport.
dunno

That's what I was thinking of doing, I hear they're pretty backed up though...but it'd be better than me trying to piss around with it I think...

is it poping if you rev the shit out of it, and let off right away? if so, its too rich. Remember that gs550? youd probabley cry if you saw how many pieces i have it in right now. lol. sometimes its just not worth it to let a show do the work. I would suggest Screwing them all teh way in, and then 2 turns out from there, then play with it. you can usually tell by your idle. or just by looking at the plugs if it is runing incorrectly.

Re: Adjusting carbs 3 Years, 5 Months ago
on my bike i have to change the jets to change the fuel air mixture. i just start out really rich(better safe than sorry) then take it for a little ride. check the plugs, they should be dark and a bit wet, then go down a size until its running good, and the plugs are a nice brown. mine might be different though cause its 2 stroke, ive never touched a 4 stroke. my roomate is a bike mechanic and has been since he was like 12 in his dads shop so if theres any long wait lists, you might wanna drive to hanley( 1 1/2 hrs north of regina on 11) he could have it done in no time. i think their shop rate is 40/hr cause its a small town so it would probably be worth your gas money to drive out. it would only be a cuople of hours.

Might be a good time to try and talk to someone there about getting a group / forum member discount on parts and labour. I know that alsport have been great at helping me out for the parts I was looking for, and I got a great deal on the price. Besides getting the tires mounted, I really haven't delt with the service side before.

I work at the airbase in MJ, and the local bike club here have made a deal with both the dealers in town. I believe they get 10% off any parts, not to sure about the service side though.

That's a good idea. Josh and I are in the midst of talkin' with a few places around the province about group discounts for members of SMA (both street & sport). sasksportbike has been around for a while now and the large member base gives us a stronger case for discounts.

The difficult thing can be that since there are only a few shops around, it can be difficult gettin' anything out of them since alot of times they're one of the only games in town and most guys would go there anyhow.
