Once upon a time, there was a small village, whose primary source of income was their apple crops. The richest farmer of the area always had a bountiful harvest and had managed to accumulate a small fortune. As rich people sometimes do, he bragged to his friends about his wealth and of course, fate took exception to this because no one likes a braggart.

The next year at harvest time, just as the farmer and his family were getting ready to pluck the apples, a small fire started among his trees. He and his family quickly put the fire out without significant damage to the trees, BUT, the smoke ruined the crop and they were without income that year. Not to worry though said the farmer, I'm rich and can afford one bad year.

The next year at harvest time, again, just as the farmer was getting ready to pick the apples, another small fire started. Like the year before, they got the fire out quickly and saved the trees, but the crop was ruined. Now the farmer wasn't a stupid man and he figured one year was a freak accident, two years in a row, something was wrong. He had to dip into his savings, but he spent money hiring experts at a huge cost to figure out what was causing the fires and come up with a means to stop it for next year.

Well, the third year came and the experts suggestions for fire suppression were put in place. Again, harvest time comes and just like the previous years, a fire started and despite all the new expensive equipment, the crop is ruined by smoke for the 3rd year in a row.

Well the farmer is now getting anxious, his money is almost gone and the experts were of no help. Turning to the villagers, he asked if any of them had any ideas. One old man, who was usually ignored by the previously rich farmer, finally put up his hand and mumbled, "Put sheep in your orchard, that'll fix the problem".

"Sheep" exclaimed the farmer. "What a silly idea". He ignored the old man and continued talking with the villagers. The farmer agreed to spend the last of his money on the upcoming harvest to have local villagers stationed around the orchard to prevent any problems.

Well, the 4th harvest season rolled in and sure enough another fire. Despite all the villagers being right there, they could only save the trees, but not the apples themselves. The farmer is devasted by this. Now virtually pennyless, he goes back to the village for a drink. At the bar, he sees the old man who cackles a bit and says, "Told you, should have used sheep, told you".

The farmer, fortified by his drink decides, what the heck, I've got nothing to loose anymore, lets try sheep next year. So the 5th year comes around and he puts sheep in the orchard at harvest time. And do you know what, no fires. A huge harvest and he's happy once more.

And do you know what the moral to this story is?

*

*

*

*

*

*

* Only ewes can prevent forest fires......
