Clutch 3 Years ago
I think I may need to do tha clutch. I have no adjustment left at all on the tranny side and she's slipping when I really give 'er.

Couple questions...since it only slips when I really "floor" it...am I safe to ride it out for the rest of this season and wait until winter to do it as long as I'm careful and take it easy? Would a long (9 hour) highway trip be unwise with it like this? Like I said, it's not constantly slipping...

And...is a clutch easy enough to do? I've done them on many cars but never a bike...I have the manual, I can grab the case of beer, what would it take...a couple hours?

Thanks JGC...and others

Clutch shouldn't be that bad to do. Most of your slippage is going to come into play when you start moving from a stop. Once you are rolling, very little effort is required to keep it moving, so you may be able to last out the season.

Having said that, a 9 hour trip might be a bit chancy. I wouldn't say I've never taken gambles, I have. Sometimes I get burned when I do it and others I get away with it. You'd have to be the judge on how bad the slippage really is. If its small - well maybe.

Regardless, if it was me, I'd make sure I had a fully charged cell phone and a buddy with either a truck or a trailer available in Regina who'd be will to do a run out for a rescue trip if required.

BTW, if you need to borrow a trailer to haul a bike, give me a shout.

Thanks for the offer on the trailer...that's good to know. I was planning on heading up to Edmonton on the Sept 9th weekend with OleManZ so yah, I'd have a buddy with me and we'd both have cel phones and the wife is always good for a trip to come save me if need be.

It's not slipping that bad at all....just at the higher revs when it's at the top of it's powerband, if I take it easy, a guy would never know it was slipping at all...we'll see, I may be ordering some stuff from bikebandit.com here in the next couple weeks and they're selling a clutch kit for my bike for 70 bone....so I may just add that to the order...

If you have the time, take the road from Edmonton to Jasper and then Jasper to Banff. You get to drive past the Columbia ice fields. Very, very pretty. We did that run last year and I highly recommend it.

You can plot your routes by going to http://maps.yahoo.com/. They are actually pretty acurate for Canadian roads and destinations.

Re: Clutch 3 Years ago
we could do one of those monthly get togethers and replace your clutch. I've done it before on an 85 FZ750. It's pretty easy, just make sure to soak the plates in oil for a day or so before you install them.

Hell, we could even use my garage if wanted. It's a good thing for people to learn and it's easy to do. It's always nice to save money.

You need to soak the plates so they have the proper grab and don't burn. Most bikes today use a wet clutch system, where the clutch assembly sits in an oil bath. Ducati and BMW are a couple of the last holdouts for dry clutch. Wet clutch plates are an alternating mix of steel and fibre plates with complementary cogs. The fibre plates need to be saturated in oil to have the proper grab characteristics, otherwise they are too dry. It takes a few hours for the oil to penetrate the fibre plates, so soaking overnight is recommended.
Re: Clutch 3 Years ago
That's correct. Whatever oil is used for your clutch system is what you soak the new plates in.
