Re: Oil question 2 Years, 2 Months ago
James - Appreciate your comments here and food for thought. I have also looked at the springer and now the Merch. Jerry Merch was a Red Deer boy and built engines. Good engines ranging up to 125 Hp. He then decioded to build a whole bike and has come up with a Harley look alike. Even uses Road King bags on it. My delimema is that I wanted to have something different and the Hendersen meets that bill. The owner has now offered to trade my bike for his with cash to him. Said I would consider if he took trade and 2500.00 to me. On further checking I find I am right on as the antique bike group say she's worth about ten grand. I would sell mine at 12,500. We'll have to see if he comes back. As to the consumables, you're right and good point. Again I wonder about things like brake pads. I can have any seal made so that doesn't bother me. I was on the bike today and the front calipers were holding, but the wheel was moving indicating the caliper holding bolt has too much play. This bike will need some work before it goes on the road. The question is, how much work.??

Lubeman

I rode a 99 Henderson at Sturgis back in 2000. Wish I could remember the VIN number - it may be the same one. The dealer was Rice Honda out of Rapid City. I had the bike for a couple of hours. Its an interesting ride, but not I think one I'd want for a daily cruiser. It would certainly be unique - or at least moderately so and I'm sure would turn heads when you pull up with it. Ultimately for me, the handling and lack of support turned me onto my Harley. I really did like the nostalgic look of the front end - probably why I got a Heritage Springer.

It sounds like you are going into the purchase fully aware that parts will be scarce and skilled help also hard to find, so you should be okay. My only advice before buying would be to try to track down unique consumables BEFORE purchasing such as filters, seals, gaskets, etc. and grab up as many as you can.
Brake pads are probably okay to obtain. The 99 had a lot of bolt on parts and it shouldn't be that hard to get a match. I'd also be trying to track down a service manual. While tearing down and rebuilding most components isn't that hard, you may be up for some problems down the line if you don't use the proper torque setting on the bolts. I'd hate to have something warp because I didn't fasten it down tight enough and I'd REALLY hate to pull the threads out of the engine 'cause I reefed on the wrench too hard.

I did really like the look of the bike though. The way the front forks go through the fender was just soooo cool.

Your pic is exactly the bike. The only difference is, this production number 372, has straight pipes. I am led to believe that this bike was never to come into Canada. Do you know the story on this? Also this particular bike needs the front brake worked on. Seems that the caliper bolt has too much movement (play) and therefore the whole brake moves on it's assembly. Just found out as well that the antique bike club had a look at her and claim that she is a $10,000 machine and not the $17,999 the owner is asking. This will play in my favour unless he becomes obstinent.

Lubeman

I can definitely see why you'd be considering it though...it does have a unique flavour and I like the thing - nice looking ride.

And a 8000 drop in appraisal vs price would be nice but then again - kinda hard for the guy not to ask almost anything he wants when there's not one in every paper across the country for sale.

Thanks Kevin. I thought she was pretty unique as well. Especially like the cuts into the tank for the engine. On the price, I am told so far that the owner doesn't really know what he has so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I may get lucky.

Lubeman
