Some people's kids!!! (DO NOT overtighten bolts PEOPLE!!!!) 1 Year, 11 Months ago

I bought my wife an 84 FJ600 last fall as she planned to start riding this year. Turns out she went and got herself pregnant (again) over the long winter, so I've been putting off working on it since she can't ride anyhow. I want to get it running before winter so she's good to go next spring and so I started last night.

Anyhow, I go to take the carbs apart last night since it's been sitting forever. I believe the guy I bought it from bought the carbs off eBay actually so who knows how long they've been sitting.

I take off all the diaphragm covers no problem although it looks like someone had them off before and didn't put the diaphragms back in properly (the notch wasn't lined up). So then I go to take the float bowls off, first bolt no problem, second one is a pain in the butt but I got it out...but that's it.

Out of 16 bolts (with a Phillips head) in the float bowls, only 2 came out with a screwdriver.

The rest I had to drill and "easy out" which thankfully was actually an easy out surprisingly. I got them all out after all and breathed a sigh of relief.

The last guy who put it together must have thought that he needed to keep tightening it down until he stripped the bolt or else it would leak like a siv. Don't fix crap if you're an idiot. It's a friggin float bowl, not a connecting rod bolt!!!

Jerknessess.

If the carbs had been sitting for a long time without being taken appart, could have been a bit of oxidation that was helping to hold them in aswell. One thing you might want to consider looking at since you need to replace them anyhow is using allen head bolts. The last time I pulled the carbs on my bike all the Phillips head screws/bolts were replaced with SS Allenhead bolts. They are much nicer to use, plus they are shiny paz_smilie:.

Dallas...they weren't just tight. All but two Robertson heads were chewed up from being cranked in there. It was ridiculous.

But she's squeaky clean now and should be back on the bike in the next couple days here...complete with new bolts

IT RUNS!!!!

woohoo...it runs and it actually runs quite good. Needs a good carb sync but it actually idles and reves pretty good already.

I really wanted to take er for a rip but the front tire is pooched as well as the drive chain is rusty from sittin' so long.

But not a bad deal at all @ 300 bucks all in so far. I figure my wife will have a pretty nice ride for about 700 bucks all in. (Tires, drive chain, carb sync a few odds and ends should only come to less than 4 hundred)

Still have one thing to figure out though, I have an extra outlet coming from the carb that I dunno where it goes. Gonna have to do some research O0

Anyhow...it rocks. That's all I can say.

New drive chain = new sprockets? Or is this just rusted, not worn?

Glad to hear you got it running... insert maniacal laughter here... "it's alive... alive... ALIVE!"

Good to hear that you got it all back together and running. Is it possible that the extra outlet from the carbs is just simply a breather, and doesn't actually go anywhere?

As for the tires, if you need a back tire, I still have the old one off the magna at home. Tire is still in great shape, and lots of tread left. Just replaced it because I went to radial tires, and this one is a bias. I would have to check the size though as I can't remeber what it is off hand.

Well if I were to change the drivechain, I would replace the sprockets while I was at it. The chain is definitely pooched, it's stretched more on one side than the other (you can see it as you spin it around). And the thing with these bikes, if the chain does go, you are likely to rip out the side of the case with it (and then it would be like my 1100 project)

And Dallas, the tire on there is a 120/90 18. If yours is the same, I'd be interested in making a deal. Thanks for the offer O0

As far as the extra line goes, I don't think it's a breather line. I can't find anything in the manual about it but then this guy bought the carbs off eBay so they may be from a different model. I figured that it was the petcock vacuum line but there's already a vacuum line going there from the rubber grommets...so I dunno. I figure when I get her roadworthy I'll shoot down to cycle salvage and see what they think about it.

I am pretty sure the tire I have at home is a 16", but I will double check when I get home.

Any rural Saskatchewan boy knows that torque wrenches are for sissies an' ya's gots to tighten things in just as hard as yas can. If it breaks, it needed fixin' anyways...

Seriously, good to hear you got it working.

Actually James, a torque wrench usually comes in really handy, as they normally have a longer handle so that you can really tighten stuff down. You don't actually set torque before you use it though. ;D
