How many Km's is too many? 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Hey i totalled my bike off last year and am looking to buy another. But with not that much experience i was wondering how many kilometers is too many? For example, a hayabusa with 20000 kms?

I am not opposed to Sportbikes by any means but the thing I've found with buying a used sportbike is that they are almost always driven hard by the previous owner(s). That's what they're built for after all.

That being said, there are people that take care of their rides and I would say that if you are going to spend any amount of money on a bike, asking for proof of how they maintained it is key. If it was maintained well, 20000 kms is not that many at all.

Bikes that are getting over that 30-40000 k mark will most likely need overhauls of the top end and servicing of that nature - but generally these can be fairly inexpensive and if you're getting the bike for a decent price - then it's not a big deal.

My Suzuki has nearly 60000 on it (I think - it's been a long winter...hehe) and it still runs great and pulls hard.

For the most part, if you're looking for a cruiser, 20000 kms would be nothing. It all comes down to how it was driven and how it was maintained.

Good luck finding a ride!!

all depends on maintenance. its the same for a car, or any kind of engine. if it wasnt maintained, it wont last for shit.

seeing as how it's a hyabusa those 20kms were probably touring miles. and that's not much IMO.
in one season i've put around 13,000km on my bike, making sure to get my maintenance done and keep the receipts.
it should be fine if the bike was taken care of.

I will also have to echo in agreement with everyone else here, that it all depends on how the bike was maintained. Also while you are looking at the bike and talking to the seller asking questions you should be able to get a good feeling as to how well the bike was maintained. If you get a bad feeling even thought the seller tells you that everything was done on or before it was scheduled, chances are you should walk away.

On the subject of looking for a new bike I have a couple of questions for you.
You mentioned that your previous bike was written off. How did that happen?
What was your previous bike?
Since you mentioned you have limited experience, what is your level of riding experience?

Since I don't know the answer to any of the above questions I can't pass any judgment on your or your abilities. But since you mentioned the 'Busa, what I would like to say is that if you have limited riding experience you may be better off looking at a smaller displacement bike to build your experience. I have heard about and read way too many stories about inexperienced riders on liter bikes, and most don't end well. While the chances of getting into trouble on a 600 are still there, there is also a greater chance of not necessarily walking away, but at least surviving.

I know that everyone says the same thing all the time, but given the choice, I would much rather ride with you than read about you!

I was kind of guessing that is what he would have been rinding, but don't like to assume things like that. As a result that is why I figured I would play it safe and ask.

Re: How many Km's is too many? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Yup, how its used is key. There are a couple of people on the BMW sites who have over 300,000km on their bikes and there are a few Harleys out there with a couple hundred k on the odo. Not many sport bikes make it to that mark however - actually, none that I can think of. My comment on this is how long do you want to keep the bike and how many miles do you see yourself putting on it? If you plan on keeping it 5-6 years and putting on 40-60K, I'd be leaning towards a different bike. In my opinion, that be pushing the sport bike just a bit too far. On the other hand, if you are only going to keep it for a year or so and put 10-20K on the odo, you are probably ok.
