I'm due for my first oil change shortly. I'm I big believer in synthetic oils. My first choice is either Redine or Amsoil. Any reason to go conventional oil over the synthetic?

If the bike is new go dino oil for a couple, if it's used go synthetic.
Synthetic oil is supposed to hinder the rings seating.
(I read a lot)

I have also heard that you should get a few thousand miles on before switching to Synthetic.

I've always been a believer in Synthetic oil and those link just prove it to me. The past week, riding home from work at 3AM @ 2 degrees, calls for better oil IMO
From personal experience, I've seen an increase of 2mpg in my vehicle just from using synthetic.

Well I hit 1k today and change the oil, decided to go with Amsoil 10-40. Actually seems quiter on startup.

Saw this somewhere on the 'net:

"Today, the recommended oil for any engine older than 1995 would be diesel engine oil: Mobil Delvac, Shell Rotella, or Castrol diesel oils in the 5w-40 to 15w-50 range. Modern engine oils (10w-30, etc.) are too clean and far too thin to handle the demands of solid camshafts and lifters. It is important to remember not to use automobile engine oil, especially oil that claims it is formulated for high-mileage or anti-friction, because this could damage the "wet" clutch."

Does using diesel engine oil make sense to anyone. My bike's a '76 so it would be a candidate.

I have heard about guys using diesel oil in there bikes but, I have never tried it. I have been using Amsoil in my old bikes since I could get it a Peavy Mart and have never had any troubles with my old bikes (78 goldwing & KZ1000) and I have put lots of miles on them, probably 50 -60,000 kms between the two of them.
