Cruiser vs. Sportbike in a crash - do you have a guess??? 3 Years, 3 Months ago

So, I was thinking last night whilst I was out enjoying a smoke outside at Josh's place. I'm looking at our bikes, mine being a cruiser and his been a sportbike.

For some reason, crashing came to mind and I was thinking that all things being equal, I think the sportbike might put you in a better position for a crash.

Now, I have no clue if this thinking has any validity, thus why I'm posting here...

Does anyone have any thoughts of whether a guy would be better off to crash on either style of bike? My thinking here is that on a sportbike, you are already leaning forward, so in a head on type of crash where the rider would be forced straight forward, your legs, pelvis and stomach would not have to deal with the huge impact of smashing against the handlebars/tree...as much as a cruiserr that is...

On a cruiser, with many of them having your legs farther forward, it seems to me that the impact against the handlebars would be far greater, possibly breaking leg bones etc...and also putting you into a wicked flip I would think.

Any ideas??

Having not seen an accident first hand, I'm not sure what the physics are behind all this, but I was hoping someone more knowledgable than me might have an idea....

Not too sure about which is safer in a regular accident, however I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about going over backwards on a cruiser. O0

I remember reading something on this once in a magazine. The sport bikes in general are considered more dangerous. There are a couple of contributing factors:

1. Sportbikes are generally going faster and Ke=1/2MV^2 (Kinetic Energy=1/2 Mass x Velocity squared). Its the velocity squared part that gets you. If you go 30 kph and then 60 kph, you have 4 times the energy to dissipate with your brakes, your skin, your bike....

2. Sportbikes are generally lighter. While mass adds to your kinetic energy, it also gives somewhere to distribute the energy. More mass = less visible effect overall. To illustrate the point, think of which vehicle you'd rather be in if you hit a deer, an 18 wheel rig or one of the new Smart Cars.

3. Sportbikes generally sit higher. A lower center of gravity for most cruisers means less tendancy to do a high side roll.

There are all sorts of other things that figure into it like seating position if you are hit from the front, from the side, from the rear, which bike can you get off easier, which bike has a better tendency to stay in one piece, etc and each style of bike has its pros and cons.

In my opinion, you dress in bike gear when you go out, you don't do stunting on public roads and the rest don't matter.
