Parking your bike in the summer on hot asphalt 3 Years, 3 Months ago

Just thought I'd share this for general use. How many of the members here have parked their bike on hot asphalt and come back a little while later to find the foot of the kickstand has sunk way down in the pavement and the bike is either leaning way over or has fallen?

Well, I've got a simple solution. It works so well, I gave away a bucket of them at Sturgis 3 years ago. Take a hockey puck, a pencil, a knife and a sharp chisel. If you are really fortunate, you can use a drill press, milling machine or dremel.

Place the hockey puck under your kickstands foot and trace an outline of the foot. Now cut the edges with a knife and use the chisel to remove the excess material.

Cost - about $0.50 and time about 10 minutes.

When you go to park, place the puck under the kickstand and the increased area should keep your bike up. Also, if you drive away and forget it, well, its a puck for crying out load - make another. One guy at the Sturgis rally was so impressed, he drilled a hole in it an put a leather thong through it so he could simply pull it up without bending over.

A jar lid works as well...with no "dremelling" but the puck idea sounds like a much safer plan. I mean a metal jar lid will get hot as well, and on a super hot day, there is a slim possibility that a jar lid might sink in as well...

HagenZ from sasksport actually had his interceptor on the center stand overnight and it still managed to tip over from sinking in...that has GOT to suck!!

Actually, there are 4 reasons why I used a puck

- The rubber won't heat up
- The rubber won't scratch the chrome/paint on the kickstand
- The rubber bends/deflects to accomondate irregularities in the ground
- We're Canadian - pucks are common up here

sounds good, I was just wondering what the finished product looked like. Thanks for the advice. I may be able to find a puck around home somewhere.

The city wanted to charge you??

Ok my bike has sunk into the ground on many occasions... my parking stall looks like a mini mine field. I have used jar lids, but quite often they still sink into the ground as well. I usually just leave it there on the ground too (who would want to steal a jar lid?), but sometimes it just simply blows away. lol

I am going to try this puck thing! Thanks James.
