Graduated Motorcycle Licenses Coming To Sask

Changes come into effect in 2011

Reported By Benson McCulloch - NewsTalk 980

The days of simply writing an exam and then hopping on a powerful motorcycle are numbered.

The province is moving towards a graduated licensing program complete with a mandatory road test. The changes will come into effect in 2011.

There will be three stages to the proposed program - Learner, Novice 1, and Novice 2. As riders pass through these stages, they will see fewer restrictions until eventually graduate to an "M" licence in 36 months. Any tickets or accidents will delay the process.

Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill expressed his support saying the change "is a major step to improve motorcycle safety in the province".

Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff says the cost of the mandatory training course will cost between $350 and $450. He says the government will work with the private sector to increase the number of training spaces available.

Wonder how much it will help.

I mean when a kid is busted going 200km/hr they are breaking the law. So with a graduated license...it is just another law to break.

It will help. It will help the people who want to be safe but are just not skilled enough to be safe.

The people who want to be careless and dangerous jerks... they still will be.
