Winter storage -- plated or not? 2 Months, 1 Week ago
What's the drill for putting the bike up for winter storage -- should I keep it plated for the insurance or just have an insurance package for while its not on the road?

To my understanding, plate insurance covers very little other than public liability and property damage (yours and others) with a deductable of $750. To insure yourself properly you require a package policy which will do the following: (Depending on how much you want to spend).
1. Reduce your deductable.
2. Increase your PL and PD. ( Real important if you have an accident in the US and you get your ass sued).
3. Be inssured for such things as theft, vandalism, wildlife, fire etc.

Based on the above, I recommend you get a yearly package policy and only buy plate ins for your riding period. (Not likely to cause PL, PD if you are not rolling.)

Some house ins policies will cover your bike if stolen from your garage but if it is stored at the neighbors or stolen while at the shop gettng its winter tune-up you might be sol.

My opinion based on my understanding. I could be wrong, but.

You're right, a package policy will cover the bike when you take the plates off for the winter. I pay 12 bucks a month, that gives me a million liability and a $100 deductible. So I plate it in the spring, pull the plates off in the fall and keep the package policy on it uear round.

A hint though is to get a package policy while the bike is plated, if you try and get one while it's not plated, they charge you alot more since they consider it storage insurance.

Good point.

Another IMPORTANT thing to remember that the package policy ONLY covers STORAGE. If the bike is being worked on...even so much as doing an oil change the insurance is null and void. There is also no insurance if you transport the bike.

So...moral of story is if something happens when you are doing anything or moving it do NOT let the insurer know that.
