Licencing a dirt bike? 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Anyone know if it is legal in saskatchewan? im not taking a trail permit, but street legal. Now i know you have to get a kit for the signals and all the other required lights, and youd have to use an enduro style bike. all i need to know is can i apply to register a dirtbike if it is "street legal".

Licensing converted bikes has always been very easy in Sask. up until as recently as a couple of yrs. ago. Lately I've been been hearing it's been difficult to impossible but that's been 2nd hand info. It may be a good idea to try and find someone(knowledgeable?) at SGI before going to all the trouble to convert your bike.

Hah. the bike sat there for a year and a half with me phoning every month, and eventually every week and them constantly telling me that it will be next week, oh yeah next week, this went on for a year and a half. then i picked it up. took it back for it to be finished, and it was annother 8 months before anything happened. Needless to say ill contact them in the spring, and see what happens there.

Re:Licencing a dirt bike? 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
My first street bike was a 1970 Suzuki TS 250, which is an enduro. I had no problem registering it, but that was before they did inspections. The blinkers didn't work, the headlight didn't work (I didn't ride it at night anyway) and the horn didn't work. The tail light did though, and this was what I was most concerned about. I think the only thing you have to worry about are the lights and the horn. The guy at SGI was very concerned about the horn although I found that he didn't know very much about the law.

When I was taking my road test, he asked if the signals worked and I said that I'd hand signal. He said sorry, you can't do that because cars may not see it. I told him it didn't matter whether they could or not. The law says that hand signalling is legal. So he went back inside and checked and it was okay.

My advice is to research the LAW and don't go by heresay.

I'm not sure, the best plan would probably be to give SGI a call and ask them what the process is.

Re:Licencing a dirt bike? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I receive a reply back from SGI today.

QUOTE:
Thanks for your inquiry, it my understanding that you are considering
purchasing or wanting to modify an motorcycle manufactured for off-road
use to make it eligible for registration. The following information is
provided to assist you with your decision and understanding of the
requirements. This process does not apply to vehicles being offered for
retail/commercial sale. This information also only applies to
motorcycles falling under the Transport Canada definition of
"Restricted-Use Motorcycle (RUM)" and as such, if manufactured after
December 1, 2004, must bear a 17 digit alphanumeric Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN) as required by CMVSS 115.

Please note: if importing the motorcycle we strongly suggest you check
with RIV (http://www.riv.ca) prior to importing the bike, since
Restricted-Use Motorcycles are not explicitly exempt from the Registrar
of Imported Vehicles Program).

In order to consider an Off-Road (RUM) motorcycle for road use, SGI
would at a minimum want confirmation from a recognized brand (i.e.
Honda, KTM, Yamaha or Suzuki) dealership that the motorcycle is equipped
with steering, suspension, brakes, frame, forks, exhaust, wheels, tires
and lighting components or systems manufactured for street/highway use
and confirmation the motorcycle is compliant with all sections of The
Vehicle Equipment Regulations for motorcycles (Type-M vehicles, sections
220 through 254) which can be accessed through the following link:
http://www.qp.gov.sk.ca/documents/English/Regulations/Regulations/V2-1R10.pdf.
The vehicle must also be equipped with tires and wheels/rims that
comply with both the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) and
Canadian Motor Vehicle Tire Safety Standards (CMVTSS) for highway
operation, which can be accessed through the following link:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/acts-regulations/general/M/mvsa/menu.htm. The
brakes must be hydraulic brakes on both wheels and the rear brake must
be operated by a foot pedal.

Once the modifications have been completed and compliance is confirmed
by a recognized motorcycle repair facility, the motorcycle may qualify
for registration as a current year “home built” motorcycle. The
owner is responsible for all costs associated with having a facility
inspect and verify compliance and for any costs associated with the
application of a replacement serial number.
