Planning a ride out West 1 Year, 3 Months ago
|
|
|
I am meeting up with a buddy near Red Deere and we are planning a 4 day trip West from there. We would like to spend as much time in the mountains as possible. Just wondering if anyone has been out that way and could recommend some good routes? Thanks, Brian.

I don't know the road west of Rocky Mtn House so I can't advise you on it one way or the other but, the 1A west of Cochrane is a great streach of road. Espescially the streach from Banft to Lake Louise/Castle Mtn(Bow Valley Pkwy).
Once into BC, My favorite roads are:
New Denver - Kaslo
Kootenay Bay - Creston
And if you are traveling between Radium and Cranbrook/Kimberley, get off the 95 at Invermere and take the "Westside Rd" down the otherside of the lake.
Sorry if this info is a little late. I just got back from a bike-trip to BC the same day you started this thread.

Thanks for the reply. We are leaving on Friday. I think the tentative plan is to go Revelstoke, Vernon, Nakusp, Nelson and back up North. The way it sits, nothing is written in stone, we could end up anywhere and any input is great! Did you camp or stay in rooms? If rooms, how did you find availability just rolling in?

Vernon - Nakusp is susposed to be great although I haven't had a chance sample it personally.
We stay in hotels. Too old for camping.
We like to put on a lot of miles each day and ride pretty hard, at the end of the day setting up a campsite just seems like too much work vs. dropping my gear in a hotel room and jumping in the pool.
The only time we have had trouble getting a room is on Fradays and Saturdays. Sometimes on weekends you have to keep rideing to the next town or two down the road before you can find a place to stay. The rest of the week it's easy to just roll up to a place you like the looks of and get a room.
Hotels in BC aren't exactly cheep but we did find that the dumps aren't much of a savings over a reasonable place with a pool or hottub.
What do you ride?
How many and what kinds of bikes are you traveling with?

We decided to book rooms as well. It took some phoning but we managed to get rooms in each of the towns we wanted. The average price of a room is about $100.00. I ride a '93 Virago 1100 and my buddy is riding a mid 80's Honda. I have tried to make my bike as long haul friendly as possible. I just installed a set of forward controls, took the seat cover off and modified the contour of the foam and found a nice sized bag that sits behind and makes a nice back rest. When we were booking rooms, all the locals say the weather has been super hot. I hope it is nice next week. I will take some pics and report back on the routes we take. Thanks again, Brian.

Well we made it back safe and sound! What a great trip we had. The first day took us from Lacombe AB to Revelstoke B.C. Some of the most rugged and scenic mountain ridding came the afternoon of our first day through the Kicking Horse pass just outside of Golden. The second day took us from Revelstoke to Nelson. This is the road that the trip was planned around. From Lumby to to the ferry at Fauquire is the best ridding I have ever experienced! 40 - 50km corners, 20 - 30km switch backs all linked together while climbing in and out of some of the best scenery around! Forget about straight, all you do is drag the pegs for a couple of hours!! The third day took us from Nelson back up to Golden via Cranbrook. The ride north from Cranbrook was fairly straight by the previous days standards but it felt good to make some quick miles. The fourth day took us from Golden back to Lacombe. We had travelled the same road on day one. We did 2200km in 4 days and by the time we hit the hotel room, a quick bite and a beer and we were done! As far as cost, about $450.00 for 4 days. I'll try to post a few pics. Thanks, Brian.

Hey fellas! Just a quick update on the trip I went on last fall. My ridding buddy from Alberta submitted an article to Cycle Canada about the trip we took and it was published in the First Person section at the back of the mag. I'm not sure if any of you subscribe but its kind of cool.

It is in the Feb. 08 issue. My buddy said he received $100.00 for getting the article published. Yeah, I bought 2!
