Firstly, I'm glad you made it through the accident. Would you be willing to share your experience in a bit more detail with a "lessons learned" type thing. I think this could really help others think about how they might prevent a similar fate.

I have only laid a bike down once and it was simply a newbie thing and I was only going 5kms/hr so I don't have first hand experience with a serious accident (on a motorcycle anyhow).

I do think that as long as I am physically able to ride - I will. I am sure that if the accident was serious enough, I would - like you - have some fear when I did mount my next bike, but I think I would ride anyway - I love it to much.

Regards';

Kevin

it was 2 years ago on june 30th. it was 11 in mourning when it happend. we were on are way into town on our 82' honda gold wing, ntohing on that bike was stock. covered from heal to toe with chrome. my dad was driveing and i was the passenger. we came to the intersection of 15th and 15th in prince albert saskatchewan, the light was red as we were aproaching and it turned green when we slowed to about 50 km there was 3 cars that turned left down the hill in front of us all but one went. it was a red honda integra she hesitated and then when we got close enough she spun her tires and hit my on my left leg. molding it to the shape of her bumper. my dad got pinned under the bike as i flew off and broke my helmate in 2 peacis. my dad had sever road rash all over his body and broke his ankle in 2 places. he was hte lucky one. i had road rash on my right leg and my left leg, well was partly cut off. it was shattered in 2 place's. my feamer and my tibiea. while in the hospital i was under the knife for 6 hours and died twice on the table i was in the intensive care unit for 3 weeks. ware i had a blood clot in my lung. it passed. the girl who hit us got out of her car wich was stolen and ran. she was drunk and high... my dad is ok still feels pain because of arthritus now. i on the other hand have my left side replaced with metal bones. that is my story comment on it if you pleas i would realy appreiciate your feed back and would be happy ot answer anymore questions. and i do hae a more detailed story about it if you would like it pleas leave me your email and i well email it to you when i have time, thank you

Leave it to our justice system to let someone walk away like that.

I just dropped my bike for the first time, but unlike you, my ego suffered the most damage. The bike only suffered minor scratches (none to the frame, forks, or engine thankfully!)and I can't wait to get on again.

The accident has made me more aware of my surroundings though. It happened near my house, on the same patch of gravel that I see and pass through every day. That's the problem with biking though: once you get good, you forget the danger and obsticles become commonplace, and that's when accidents happen.

Nicely said Atlas, we all need to sit back every once in a while and appreciate the dangers we subject ourselves to every time we hop on.

As a passenger on a bike, riding a bike again is going to certainly be different than had you been the operator. No matter how you cut it, you psychologically know you were not responsible. That said, it does not diminish the severity of the accident and what happened to you and your father.

Whether you ride again, or continue to ride, will be a personal choice. I do not think anyone can offer you guidance. Whether another would ride, well, certainly some would, others would not.

I've been involved with motorcycle accidents on a few fronts (none i did not walk away from where it was my fault), one even more tragic than your very unfortunate case.

But is that not the thrill of riding -- you have total freedom.

"True freedom comes with great responsibility. The only time you are totally free, is when you are totally responsible for your own actions, safety, health, etc. A true "motorcyclist" is one who truly understands the risks and responsibilities of riding a motorcycle, and yet, continues to do so." California John

Ride safely.

That's the one thing I just don't want to think about happening. I am taking my endorsement 6 test next week, but I have been driving motocross bikes since I was 10, I am 17 now. But I have never really had any real bad wipeouts

Are you planning on taking the safety course Colin? It teaches alot of great things even if you've been riding all your life.

Accidents? I have had a few. All are at least 1/2 my fault.

First one a woman pulled out in front of me and I met her windshield (forgot to let go of the bars)
Scary part was she was watching me coming and waited to pull out until there was nowhere for me to go (we had made eye contact).

2nd accident was a low speed lay down in a muddy construction route...
In front of a few hundred people at Bryant park in P.A. I got a rousing round of applause tho.

Last one was almost the last time I rode.
It was about 1:30am and a half ton figured to take a run and scare me, except musta screwed up, cause he knocked me into a parked car.

I shoulda known, there was 2 real tell tale signs too.
1. way to late to be riding in P.A.
2. should have noticed the cars lining both sides of the road and avoided party central.

And the thing I should have done at the time...
3. noticed the plate so I could visit later.

It happened way to fast for me to do anything and by the time I pulled my face off the road they were long gone.
I kept the bike in the garage for a long time, and every time I got the urge I would go look at it for a while
I have had other lay downs, but that was cause they don't really make street bikes to ride in the dirt.
