Great Sask riders site! 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Just stumbled across this site. Great to see so many Sask motorcycle enthusiasts!
I recognize some of you, even sold bikes to a couple of you. Mr.Wolf, (long time no see!) Gregory, (looks like the 550 found an enthusiastic new owner!)
Anyway, on to the introduction...
I'm a long time motorcycle enthusiast currently most passionate about riding and restoring vintage European and Japanese bikes/scooters. During the last few years I've spent a lot of my riding time on Dual sport bikes exploring the gravel back roads of SW Sask. An amazing amount of great riding and scenery "off the beaten path" in Sask! I've recently caught the "Adventure Touring" bug and bought a bought a big ADV. bike (my only "new" bike), and haven't spent many summer weekends at home since, usually Sask, Alberta and BC. Always looking for an excuse for a ride!
Looking foreword to meeting you all!

Welcome to SMA!

You'll notice the forum around here lacks on activity but I try to get some info up on the site during the parked motorcycle season especially regarding events going on in the province.

I'm hoping to get a weekly ride going in the summer here...so stay tuned for that and I look forward to meeting you out there.

Kind Regards;

Kevin

Hey there,

noticed your post... thought I would ask you a quick question seeing as how you like to work on older bikes.

1982 honda cx500 custom CDI box. Mine is still working fine, however it is no longer made and it is really only a matter of time before the caps start failing.

Is is possible to make a new one... or am I stuck trying to find another old one... that may be close to failing as well?

She is a really sweet old girl, and in nice shape... I can get or make anything else I need.

any suggestions. ?

Dick

Hi Rotog,
Love the CXs, they're not that unlike my old Moto Guzzi...(the V the the way it's supposed to be!).
I'd like to be able to give you some helpful input but I hate to admit electronics are not one of my stronger points. I know CDI boxes can be scratch built for the CX but I don't personally know anyone who has actually done it. It must only be a matter of time before someone recognizes the market and does produce a new replacement for the earlier CX? Do you think it may be worth the "peace of mind" to take your chances and find a spare (proven) unit to have on hand in case yours does fail before they're available? It would "hurt" to miss part of our already short riding season while hunting for a used box. As you probably already know, the part we need for our old bike is only available BEFORE ours fails and we start looking for a replacement.... or after you already have one!

Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

Newt.

In reply to Rotog:

I wouldn't worry too much about the CDI box failing. Between my dad and myself, we have four pre-'75 Suzukis with CDI's and they all still work fine. When a problem does occur (mostly on our TM400s) it is usually nothing more than a bad connection which is quickly remedied with a quick cleaning of the connectors with some sand-paper.
